What is unit cost?
Unit cost (cost per item) is Shopify's field for the purchase price of a variant. It sits in each variant's inventory and is the basis of every calculation. Without a maintained unit cost you don't know your margin.
Why cost prices go stale
Suppliers change prices, new variants arrive without a cost, old stock has gaps. Across hundreds of variants, upkeep quickly gets messy — especially if you have to open each variant in Shopify individually.
